The 28K Hotmail Combo Breach Put 27,981 Stolen Login Pairs Online

HEROIC analysts identified a combolist named "28K HOTMAIL COMBO hqhotmailcomboowner" that was uploaded to a Telegram channel on 9 November 2024. The file contains 27,981 records pairing Hotmail email addresses with plaintext passwords and associated URLs, giving anyone who finds it a sizable batch of ready-to-use login credentials.

Why This Is Dangerous

Because the passwords in this combolist are stored in plaintext, an attacker does not need to crack or guess anything to use them. They can log into any of the affected Hotmail accounts directly, and if a victim reused that same password elsewhere, the same login could unlock email, banking, or social media accounts on other platforms too.

What Was Exposed

  • Email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords
  • Associated URLs

Why This Matters

A combolist of nearly 28,000 records gives attackers a substantial pool for credential stuffing, the practice of automatically testing stolen email and password pairs against many different websites at once. Because Hotmail accounts are often used to reset passwords for other services, a compromised login here can quickly cascade into a much broader compromise of someone's online identity.

How a Combolist Leak Works

A combolist gathers email or username and password pairs from earlier breaches, phishing pages, or malware infections and compiles them into a single downloadable file. Telegram has become a common venue for distributing these files because uploads are quick, free, and hard for platforms to remove, allowing combolists like this one to circulate widely once released.

Check If You Are Affected

If you use a Hotmail or Outlook account, or if you have ever reused a password across different sites, it is worth checking whether your information appears in this leak. HEROIC's free breach scanner searches a database of more than 400 billion leaked records to tell you instantly if your email has been exposed, so you can change any vulnerable passwords before someone else does.
