HEROIC analysts flagged 3,017 exposed records tied to BrainDen, a breach dated January 2015 that continues to surface in credential collections today. The exposed data includes email addresses, usernames, passwords, IP addresses, and password hash type information, giving anyone who obtains this data enough detail to attempt logins on other services.

Why the BrainDen Leak Is Dangerous

The passwords in this breach were stored using the IPB hashing format, the scheme used by IP.Board forum software at the time. Older hash formats like this can be cracked with modern computing power, turning what looks like protected data into plain text passwords. Combined with email addresses, usernames, and IP addresses, this is enough for an attacker to attempt to log into other accounts, especially if a BrainDen user reused the same password elsewhere.

What Was Exposed in the BrainDen Breach

  • Email addresses
  • Usernames
  • Passwords (IPB hash format)
  • IP addresses

Why This Matters for BrainDen Users

Even though this breach dates back to 2015, that doesn't make it less useful to attackers today. Automated tools take exposed email and password pairs and test them against banking sites, email providers, and social media platforms in what's known as credential stuffing. If a BrainDen password was ever reused on another account, that account could be at risk right now, not just back in 2015.

How a Database Breach Like This Happens

This incident is classified as a database breach, meaning attackers gained direct access to BrainDen's underlying user database rather than harvesting data through malware on individual computers. Database breaches typically happen when a website's servers are compromised through an unpatched vulnerability, weak security controls, or stolen administrator credentials. Once inside, attackers export the entire user table, capturing whatever fields the site stored, in this case emails, usernames, hashed passwords, and IP addresses, in one file that can then be copied, sold, or shared indefinitely.

Check If You Are Affected by the BrainDen Breach

You don't have to guess whether your information was part of the BrainDen breach or any of the thousands of other breaches HEROIC tracks. HEROIC's free breach scanner checks your email address against a database of more than 400 billion leaked records, including this one, and tells you exactly what was exposed. If you find a match, update the password on any account still using it and turn on multi-factor authentication wherever it's available.
