3,936 Hotmail Logins Surface in the "3,900 Hotmail Hits" Stealer Log

On October 11, 2024, HEROIC analysts identified a stealer log labeled "3.900 HOTMAIL HITS," uploaded by a user on a Telegram channel. The file's name refers to roughly 3,900 working logins, though the actual dataset contained 3,936 records, each pairing an email address with a plaintext password and the URL the login was used on, all tied to Hotmail accounts.

Why This Is Dangerous

Files marketed as "hits" typically mean the credentials inside have already been tested and confirmed to work, making this a ready-to-use list rather than a raw, unverified dump. With 3,936 plaintext Hotmail passwords already validated, an attacker can move straight to logging into these accounts without any additional effort.

What Was Exposed

  • Email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords
  • URLs tied to each login

Why This Matters

A verified list of working Hotmail logins is particularly risky because email accounts are frequently used to reset passwords on other services. An attacker with access to one of these 3,936 Hotmail accounts can potentially take over banking, shopping, or social media accounts linked to that inbox, turning a single confirmed "hit" into a much wider case of account takeover.

How Stealer Logs Work

This file began as raw stolen credentials pulled from infostealer malware infections, then went through a validation step where criminals used automated tools to confirm which logins still worked. Only the confirmed working entries, 3,936 of them in this case, were kept in the final "hits" file before being distributed through Telegram, making it more dangerous than an equivalent unverified dump.
