3,701 Almafil Accounts Leaked With MD5-Hashed Passwords
In August 2018, HEROIC identified 3,701 records from Almafil, a French retailer specializing in breastfeeding and infant care products. The data appeared on a popular cybercrime forum and contained email addresses and MD5-hashed passwords.
Why the Almafil Breach Is Dangerous
Attackers can use MD5-hashed passwords as a starting point for cracking campaigns. MD5 is a weak hashing algorithm with no salting, meaning tools like Hashcat can crack common passwords in seconds using precomputed rainbow tables. Once cracked, the resulting plaintext credentials enable direct account access on Almafil and any other site where the same password was reused.

Why This Almafil Data Puts You at Risk
Credential stuffing tools can test cracked Almafil passwords across banking, email, and retail platforms in minutes. Attackers prioritize reused passwords because most people use the same credentials across multiple services. Even if the original Almafil account is low-value, a matching password elsewhere could unlock a bank account, email inbox, or e-commerce profile with stored payment methods.
How Database Breaches Work
The Almafil breach resulted from unauthorized access to the site's user database, likely through a SQL injection attack or exploitation of a vulnerable web application component. Attackers extracted the database directly, capturing authentication credentials stored with MD5 hashing. The data was then shared on a cybercrime forum to be used in automated credential attacks against other platforms.
