Alsako, a Spanish e-commerce platform selling household appliances and electronics, suffered a data breach on March 17, 2023, that affected 41,473 customers. The exposed data included email addresses, first names, and last names, compromising the personal identities of tens of thousands of shoppers. While no passwords were recieved in this breach, the combination of real names and email addresses provides attackers with everything they need to launch convincing phishing campaigns.

Why Exposed Names and Emails Create Phishing Risks

Personalized phishing attacks are far more effective than generic spam, and the Alsako leak hands criminals exactly that advantage. With a victim's full name and email address in hand, attackers can craft seperate targeted messages that appear to come from trusted sources like banks, delivery companies, or the retailer itself. This kind of social engineering can lead to further credential theft, financial fraud, or malware installation.

Why the Alsako Breach Still Matters Today

Personal information like names and email addresses does not become less valuable over time. Breached PII from incidents like Alsako is regularly aggregated with data from other leaks to build detailed profiles that are sold on dark web marketplaces. Customers who made purchases through Alsako should remain alert to unsolicited communications that reference their real name, as this may indicate targeted use of this breach data.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a site's backend data store, often through SQL injection, misconfigured access controls, or compromised credentials. Once inside, they can extract entire tables of user data in minutes. The resulting data is then packaged and sold or freely distributed on criminal forums.
