HEROIC analysts identified a 2016 data breach connected to Anime-Planet, the online community and database anime and manga fans use to track what they're watching and reading. The incident exposed 146,928 accounts, with email addresses and password hashes among the records now available to threat actors.

Why This Is Dangerous

Passwords in this breach were protected with MD5 hashing, some of it salted, and bcrypt for other accounts. MD5 is considered weak by modern standards, and even salted MD5 hashes can be cracked with enough computing power, especially for common or reused passwords. Once an attacker recovers a working password from this list, they can pair it with the matching email address and try logging into other accounts elsewhere, since so many people reuse the same password across multiple sites.

What Was Exposed

  • Email addresses
  • Password hashes (MD5 with salt, and bcrypt)

Why This Matters

A breach involving just email addresses and password hashes might look minor compared to breaches that include financial data, but it is exactly the kind of information credential stuffing attacks are built on. Automated tools take lists like this one and try the same email and password combination across hundreds of other websites, including banking, email, and shopping accounts. If you reused your Anime-Planet password anywhere else, or still use it today, you could be exposed to account takeover, identity theft, or fraud that has nothing to do with anime or manga at all.

How This Database Breach Happened

This incident is classified as a database breach, meaning attackers gained direct access to Anime-Planet's user database rather than harvesting credentials one at a time through malware. Database breaches typically happen through a vulnerability in a website's backend, a misconfigured server, or stolen administrator access. Once inside, attackers can export entire tables of user data at once, which is how incidents like this one end up affecting well over 100,000 accounts.

Check If You Are Affected

If you have ever had an Anime-Planet account, especially one created around 2016, it is worth checking whether your information is part of this exposure. HEROIC's free breach scanner searches a database of more than 400 billion leaked records to show you if your email address has appeared in this or other breaches, so you can change any reused passwords before someone else uses them first.
