HEROIC analysts identified a data breach affecting AnimeForum, a Russian anime community forum, dating back to December 7, 2017. The exposed dataset contains 132,642 records, including email addresses, usernames, birthdays, IP addresses, and passwords stored as salted MD5 hashes.

Why Salted MD5 Passwords From AnimeForum Are Still Risky

MD5 is an outdated hashing algorithm, and even with a salt added, it can be cracked far more easily than modern hashing methods using widely available cracking tools and hardware. Combined with a username, email address, and birthday, a cracked password gives an attacker enough to log in as that person or answer common security questions on other sites.

What Was Exposed in the AnimeForum Breach

  • Email addresses
  • Usernames
  • Password hashes (salted MD5)
  • IP addresses
  • Birthdays

Why an Old Breach Like This Still Matters

Even though this breach dates back to 2017, old credentials remain useful to attackers for years, especially when people reuse the same password across multiple accounts. If your AnimeForum password matches one you still use elsewhere, cracking that old MD5 hash can lead directly to credential stuffing and account takeover on completely unrelated services, along with identity theft risks from the exposed birthday and IP address.

How This Forum Database Breach Happened

This was a direct compromise of AnimeForum's user database rather than malware on individual devices. Attackers who breach a forum's database typically exploit a software vulnerability, a misconfigured server, or stolen administrator access, then copy out the entire user table, hashes and all, for later cracking and resale.

Check If You Are Affected

If you ever registered on AnimeForum, it is worth checking whether your account was part of this 132,642-record exposure, even years later. HEROIC's free breach scanner checks your email against more than 400 billion leaked records, so you can find old exposures like this one and update any passwords you may still be reusing.
