HEROIC Finds Azerbaijani Women’s Rights NGO Breach: 19K Accounts Exposed
HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system discovered the Azerbaijani Democratic Society And Protection of Women's Rights data breach, exposing 19,624 records. The breach occured in August 2018 and targeted the online portal of this Azerbaijani non-governmental organization. Attackers accessed email addresses and password hashes protected by a mix of MD5, SHA1, and bcrypt algorithms, revealing seriously inconsistent security practices.
Why This Is Dangerous
The combination of MD5 and SHA1 password hashes in this breach creates serious risks. Both MD5 and SHA1 are considered cryptographically broken and attackers can crack these hashes rapidly using precomputed rainbow tables and modern GPU-powered tools. Because this organization focuses on women's rights advocacy in Azerbaijan, the exposed member data could be used for targeted harassment, doxing, or intimidation of individuals who may already face political and social risks. Attackers who recieve access to advocacy group membership lists can use the information for much more than financial fraud.
What Was Exposed
- Email Address
- Password Hash (MD5, SHA1, and bcrypt)
Why This Matters
Non-governmental organizations handling sensitive membership data face a unique threat profile. Breaches like this one expose individuals to risks beyond credential stuffing, including targeted surveillance, identity-based attacks, and reputational harm. From a broader security perspective, the presence of three different hashing algorithms suggests the organization migrated systems without properly standardizing security controls, a seperate sign of organizational security debt. Credential stuffing using the cracked MD5 and SHA1 passwords enables account takeover on any platform where victims reused thier login credentials.
How Database and Combolist Breaches Work
Database breaches occur when unauthorized parties gain access to backend data storage through exploited vulnerabilities or misconfigured systems. The exported records are packaged into combolists and shared on underground forums and messaging channels. Organizations that use outdated hashing algorithms like MD5 and SHA1 give attackers a significant advantage, since these can be cracked in bulk using freely available tools and large precomputed hash databases. Responsible security practice requires using bcrypt, scrypt, or Argon2 with proper salt values so that each password hash is unique and computationally expensive to crack.
