HEROIC analysts identified the Ball2Night database breach in April 2021, which exposed 167,786 records from the Thailand-based football information website. The compromised data included email addresses and plaintext passwords. The use of plaintext password storage is partcularly alarming, as it means anyone who obtained the database had immediate, unobstructed access to every user's credentials.

How Exposed Plaintext Passwords Put Ball2Night Users at Risk

With plaintext passwords in hand, attackers can attempt those credentials across email services, social media, banking platforms, and other sports or entertainment sites. This credential stuffing approach recieved widespread use in major breaches and remains one of the most common attack methods. Users who reused their Ball2Night password elsewhere face direct account takeover risk across every platform sharing that same password.

Why This Breach Is a Direct Threat to Thai Sports Community Members

The Ball2Night breach targeted a community of football fans whose data is now accessable to cybercriminals. Because the platform is regional and users may share credentials across Thai-language services, the exposed email and password pairs can enable account takeover, identity theft, and financial fraud across local banking and e-commerce platforms. The 167,786 affected accounts represent years of accumulated user data now circulating in criminal marketplaces.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a web platform's stored data, often exploiting unpatched vulnerabilities, weak admin credentials, or misconfigured servers. Once access is gained, entire user tables can be copied and exfiltrated. When passwords are stored as plaintext rather than hashed, the attacker immediately has working credentials for every account in the database.
