Barony of l’Île du Dragon Dormant: 7,134 Passwords Exposed Online
HEROIC analysts identified a data breach connected to the online platform of the Barony of l’Île du Dragon Dormant, a historical reenactment and community organization based in France. Records show the breach dates to August 26, 2018, and it exposed 7,134 records made up of email addresses and hashed passwords. The dataset later surfaced on a hacking forum, where it was shared alongside other compiled credential collections.
Why This Is Dangerous
A password hash is not the same as a plaintext password, but it is not a safety net either. The hashes in this dataset were generated using older formats such as PHPass and Drupal7. Both can be cracked with widely available tools, particularly when the underlying password was short, common, or reused. Once an attacker recovers the original password, the email and password pair becomes a working set of login credentials that can be tested against other sites.
What Was Exposed
- Email addresses
- Password hashes (PHPass and Drupal7 formats)
Why This Matters for Password Reuse
Most people do not use a different password for every account. If a member of this community reused their Barony of l’Île du Dragon Dormant password on an email provider, a banking site, or a shopping account, that same email and password combination could unlock those accounts too. This is the mechanism behind credential stuffing: attackers take leaked email and password pairs and automatically test them across hundreds of other websites, looking for accounts where the same password still works. A successful match can lead to account takeover, identity theft, or financial fraud, none of which require the attacker to touch the original site again.
How a Database and Combolist Breach Happens
This incident is categorized as a database breach that later became part of a combolist. A database breach means an attacker gained direct access to a site’s stored user records, in this case emails and password hashes. A combolist is simply a compiled list of email and password pairs, often built by merging several breaches into one file so it is easier to search and reuse. Once a database like this one is copied and posted to a forum, it can be folded into combolists used for automated login attempts against unrelated services for years afterward.
Check If You Are Affected
If you have ever registered on the Barony of l’Île du Dragon Dormant’s website, or if you tend to reuse passwords across accounts, it is worth checking whether your information appears in this breach or others like it. HEROIC’s free breach scanner searches a database of more than 400 billion leaked records to show you where your email address and other personal information have been exposed, so you can change any reused passwords before someone else finds them first.
