HEROIC analysts identified a 2016 data breach connected to The Bell Tree Forums, an online community built around the Animal Crossing video game series. The breach exposed 47,327 accounts, with email addresses, usernames, and password hashes secured using the older vBulletin (VB) hashing method now among the compromised records.

Why This Is Dangerous

vBulletin password hashing was common for forum software years ago but is now considered outdated, and it can be cracked much faster than modern hashing methods. Once an attacker recovers a working password, they can pair it with the matching email address or username and attempt to log into other accounts elsewhere.

What Was Exposed

  • Email addresses
  • Usernames
  • Password hashes (vBulletin)

Why This Matters

The Bell Tree Forums draws a younger fan community around Animal Crossing, and younger users are statistically more likely to reuse the same password across gaming accounts, school accounts, and personal email. If a member reused their forum password anywhere else, that account is now at risk of takeover, along with any in-game purchases, linked payment methods, or personal messages tied to it.

How This Database Breach Happened

This incident is classified as a database breach, meaning attackers gained direct access to the forum's user database rather than collecting credentials one at a time. Forums running older software are frequent targets for attackers exploiting known vulnerabilities. Once inside, an attacker can export the entire user table in a single move, which is how one incident exposed tens of thousands of accounts at once.

Check If You Are Affected

If you or your child ever had an account on The Bell Tree Forums, especially back in 2016, it is worth checking whether that information is part of this exposure. HEROIC's free breach scanner checks a database of more than 400 billion leaked records, so you can see instantly if your email address turns up and update any passwords still being reused.
