BircoinTalk Data Breach: 13,716 Plaintext Records Exposed from Defunct Crypto Discussion Forum

BircoinTalk, a now-defunct US-based cryptocurrency discussion forum (the name appears to be a typographic variant of "Bitcoin"), suffered a database breach that exposed 13,716 unique user records in August 2018. The leaked dataset, which included email addresses and plaintext passwords, was subsequently posted on a prominent hacking forum. Cryptocurrency community members represent a valuable credential stuffing target: users active on crypto discussion forums in 2018 were statistically likely to hold accounts on exchanges, wallets, and trading platforms -- services where a compramised credential could result in direct financial theft. Plaintext passwords accelerate this risk by eliminating any cracking step.

BircoinTalk (August 2018): Data Breach Summary

  • Records Exposed: 13,716
  • Data Types: Email addresses, plaintext passwords
  • Breach Type: Database breach -- unauthorized access to stored user credentials
  • Password Type: Plaintext -- stored without hashing or encryption; immediately usable without any cracking
  • Country: United States
  • Date Leaked: August 26, 2018

Crypto Forum Users as High-Value Credential Targets

Discussion forums around cryptocurrency have historically attracted users with heightened security awareness -- but also users who hold significant financial assets in digital form. In 2018, the crypto market had recently experienced its largest bull run, meaning many BircoinTalk users were likely actively holding or trading crypto assets. For threat actors using credential stuffing, a dataset sourced from a crypto discussion forum is a prioritized target: the email-password combination can be tested against Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, LocalBitcoins, and dozens of other exchange and wallet services. Plaintext password storage by BircoinTalk -- a platform in the Financial/News category -- represents a particularely severe failure given the financial context of its user base. The total dataset of over 19,000 rows yielded 13,716 unique email-password pairs, suggesting the underlying database contained duplicates or inactive accounts alongside the usable credential set.

The August 26, 2018 Multi-Site Disclosure

BircoinTalk shares its August 26, 2018 disclosure date with at least two other datasets in this pipeline -- Specialty Readers (USA, 10,083 records) and Bio-Forme (France, 12,075 records). The clustering of unrelated platforms around the same date is consistent with a bulk combolist release, in which a threat actor aggregates credential dumps from multiple smaller targets and releases them as a single batch on underground forums. This distribution method inflates the apparent size of the release while allowing the actor to monetize lower-value individual datasets by bundling them with higher-profile content. BircoinTalk's financial community focus likely made it the most valuable single dataset in any such bundle that included it.

Check If Your Data Was Exposed

HEROIC's free breach scanner searches across more than 400 billion exposed records, including the BircoinTalk database breach. If your email appears in this dataset and you used the same password on any cryptocurrency exchange or wallet service in 2018, those accounts should be treated as compromised regardless of whether the breach was ever publicly disclosed to you. Run your email through HEROIC's breach scanner to identify all breach appearances and secure high-value accounts first.
