HEROIC analysts identified a stealer log dataset uploaded to a public Telegram channel in September 2024 by an operator using the handle "OTTOHELP." The log contained 1,678 compromised records tied to Brunei-based endpoints, exposing email addresses, plaintext passwords, and associated URLs. The data is consistent with output generated by infostealer malware running silently on victim devices, systematically harvesting credentials from browsers, email clients, and web applications.

Why This Is Dangerous

Stealer logs uploaded to Telegram are immediately accessible to thousands of threat actors at no cost. Because the passwords in this dataset are in plaintext, attackers do not need to crack anything. They can take a credential pair and attempt it against email platforms, banking portals, corporate VPNs, and cloud services within minutes. The inclusion of URLs reveals exactly which services were targeted, giving attackers a precise roadmap for account takeover attempts.

What Was Exposed

  • Email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords
  • URLs (login portals and API endpoints)

Why This Matters

Credential datasets like this one fuel a cycle of downstream attacks. Once a credential pair is confirmed working through credential stuffing, attackers pivot to account takeover, draining financial accounts, hijacking email to request wire transfers, or selling verified access to other criminals. Identity theft follows when attackers harvest personal details from compromised inboxes. Even a single working credential from a dataset this size can enable significant financial or reputational damage to the victim.

How Stealer Logs Work

Infostealer malware is typically delivered through phishing emails, malicious software cracks, or trojanized browser extensions. Once installed on a victim's device, it runs silently in the background and extracts saved passwords from browsers, email clients, and desktop applications. It also captures session cookies, autofill data, and visited URLs before packaging everything into a structured log file. The attacker then retrieves the log, often through an automated Telegram bot, and either uses the credentials directly or sells them in bulk on dark web marketplaces. The Telegram upload method allows rapid distribution to a wide criminal audience with minimal traceability.
