In July 2025, HEROIC analysts discovered the CaptainBayOwner 638count stealer log circulating in a private Telegram channel. The dataset contains 25,450 records of email addresses, plaintext passwords, and URLs harvested from 638 compromised endpoint devices. The breach was confirmed on July 2, 2025. Upon discovery, HEROIC indexed the data and added it to our breach monitoring database. The free Telegram distribution means this data reached an unknown number of criminal actors before HEROIC identified it.

Why This Is Dangerous

The CaptainBayOwner 638count dataset contains plaintext passwords, which require no decryption or cracking to use. Any attacker who downloaded this file from Telegram had immediate access to 25,450 working credential sets. The URLs included in each record eliminate any guesswork about which platforms to target, directing attackers straight to email inboxes, banking portals, and payment services used by each victim. At this scale, automated credential stuffing tools can process the entire dataset across hundreds of websites within hours of the file becoming available.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Addresses
  • Plaintext Passwords
  • URLs (sites accessed from infected devices)

Why This Matters

With 25,450 records in a single dump, the downstream risk is substantial. Credential stuffing campaigns fueled by stealer log data lead to account takeovers across email, banking, and e-commerce platforms. Once an email account is compromised, attackers can intercept password reset links for every other account tied to that address, creating a cascade of takeovers that is difficult to contain. People who beleive strong passwords protect them should understand that stealer logs bypass password strength entirely, capturing credentials as they are typed or auto-filled. Identity theft becomes a realistic threat when attackers access email inboxes and can impersonate victims for financial verification or fraud. The seperate records in this dataset together create a detailed picture of each victim's digital life.

How Stealer Log Breaches Work

The CaptainBayOwner 638count dump is the product of a coordinated infostealer campaign across 638 individual devices. Infostealer malware is typically distributed through pirated software, phishing emails, and fake utility applications. When a victim installs the infected software, the stealer activates silently and harvests all saved credentials from the browser, including passwords, session cookies, and autofill data. Each infected device generates one log file, and these logs are bundled together by the operator. The resulting dataset is then uploaded to Telegram, often for free distribution to build reputation in criminal circles. Victims rarely recieve any warning until accounts begin showing unauthorised activity, sometimes months after the initial infection occured.
