The Carpan Data Quietly Appeared on the Dark Web in January 2022
In January 2022, a dataset attributed to Carpan, a Ukrainian e-commerce platform focused on fishing supplies, quietly surfaced on a dark web forum. The breach recieved little mainstream attention, but for the 5,532 individuals whose data was exposed, the risks are very real. The leaked records appear to be a direct database dump containing both personal identifiers and password credential material.
What Attackers Can Do With Stolen Carpan Credentials
With a mix of MD5 (salted) and other password hashes in hand, attackers can run offline cracking tools against the weaker MD5 hashes with relative ease. Once plaintext passwords are recoverd, those credentials become ammunition for credential stuffing attacks across banking, email, and shopping platforms where victims may have reused the same password.

Why This Breach Still Matters Today
Data from breaches rarely disappears. Records leaked in 2022 are still being traded, combined with data from other incidents, and used in targeted phishing campaigns. For Ukrainian e-commerce customers partcularly, the combination of full name, phone number, and email in one record makes social engineering attacks straightforward and convincing.
How a Database Breach Works
A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a backend database, typically through SQL injection, stolen credentials, or an exposed database port. Once inside, they can export entire tables of user records in seconds. The resulting dump is then sold or shared on dark web forums, where other criminals purchase it to fuel further attacks.
