In November 2023, HEROIC's threat intelligence team identified a stealer log file uploaded to a public Telegram channel, labeled crypton_logs 2.0 309pcs. The file contained 5,987 records harvested from compromised devices using infostealer malware. Each record included an email address, a plaintext password, and a URL indicating which service the victim had been logged into at the time of infection. The data was made publicly available on Telegram, meaning anyone who downloaded it could attempt to log into those accounts immediately -- no hacking skills required.

Why This Is Dangerous

Unlike database breaches where passwords are hashed and must be cracked, stealer logs capture credentials in plaintext directly from the victim's device. Attackers recieve ready-to-use login combinations with zero additional effort. Because most people reuse passwords across multiple services, a single exposed credential can give an attacker access to email, banking, cloud storage, and social media -- often all at once. The scenario is not hypothetical: credential stuffing tools can test thousands of logins per minute.

What Was Exposed

The following data types were confirmed in the crypton_logs 2.0 Telegram upload:

  • Email Addresses
  • Plaintext Passwords
  • URLs (the specific sites and services victims were accessing)

Why This Matters

With 5,987 credentials exposed and distributed openly on Telegram, the attack surface is immediate and wide. The URLs included in this log are particularly revealing -- they tell attackers exactly which services to target with each stolen password. This makes credential stuffing attacks more efficient and more damaging than a seperate password list alone. The data has been available since November 2023, meaning affected accounts may have already been accessed without the owner knowing.

How Stealer Log Breaches Work

Infostealer malware typically spreads through phishing emails, cracked software downloads, or malicious browser extensions. Once installed, it runs silently in the background and scans for saved credentials in browsers, password managers, and apps. It also captures active session cookies, which can be used to bypass two-factor authentication. The harvested data is packaged into a log file and transmitted to an attacker-controlled server or uploaded directly to a Telegram channel. The entire exfiltration process can occured within minutes of infection -- often before any security software detects the threat.
