In May 2023, a file called crypton_logs3 was uploaded to Telegram, quietly expanding the pool of stolen credentials available to cybercriminals. The file contained 3,132 records harvested from infected computers -- each record carrying email adresses, plaintext passwords, and the URLs of websites where those credentials were actively in use. The people behind these records did not know their data was being collected at the time. They likely still do not know it has been distributed. That information gap is precisely what makes this kind of breach so dangerous and so easy to exploit.

Why This Is Dangerous

When a stealer log is uploaded to Telegram, it enters a marketplace. Buyers range from individual scammers running small-scale account takeovers to organized criminal groups executing large fraud operations. The plaintext passwords in this log require no processing before use -- they go directly into credential stuffing scripts that run automated login attempts across banking, retail, and social media platforms. The URLs included in the dataset make the attacks even more targeted, because attackers already know which sites the victim uses. There is no guessing required. The path from stolen credential to compromised account is shorter than most people realize.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Addresses
  • Plaintext Passwords
  • URLs (the specific sites where passwords were captured)

Why This Matters

Identity theft does not always require a massive breach. Three thousand records is more than enough to cause serious financial and personal harm to the people whose data is included. Each record in this log represents a complete credential pair -- username and password -- tied to a specific website. Combined with email access, an attacker can reset passwords, lock victims out of accounts, intercept financial statements, and build a convincing false identity using real personal details. This occured without any corporate negligence or system vulnerability. The infection that produced this data happened on individual devices, meaning no notification laws were triggered and no company was required to inform anyone. Most of the 3,132 people in this dataset will never recieve a warning.

How Stealer Log Breaches Work

Crypton logs are a category of stealer log named for the collection method or tool used by the threat actor. The underlying malware typically spreads through pirated software, fake game modification files, phishing emails, or compromised download links. Once installed on a device, the malware captures everything stored in the browser -- saved passwords, active session cookies, autofill data, and any credentials typed during the infection period. This data is packaged into a structured log file and uploaded to a collection server. The attacker then distributes the logs across Telegram channels, often in numbered series -- hence crypton_logs3 being the third in a set -- to buyers who use the credentials for fraud.

Check If You Are Affected

Standard breach notifications do not cover stealer log incidents. If your device was infected with information-stealing malware in 2023 or earlier, you may have no idea your credentials are circulating on the dark web right now. HEROIC's free scanner checks more than 400 billion exposed records -- including stealer logs like crypton_logs3 -- to tell you whether your email address or passwords have been compromised.
