Cloud Miners Targeted in the 22K Record CryptoStar.Asia Breach

HEROIC analysts discovered that in April 2020, the cloud mining platform CryptoStar.Asia suffered a database breach exposing 22,274 user records. The compromised data included email addresses, MD5 password hashes, and IP addresses, leaving cryptocurrency users accessable to both account takeover and geolocation-based targeting.

MD5-Hashed Crypto Credentials and IP Addresses Put Miners Directly at Risk

MD5 is a broken hashing algorithm that can be reversed using rainbow tables and modern cracking hardware within minutes or hours. When combined with IP addresses, these cracked credentials allow attackers to identify the physical network location of cloud mining users and launch targeted attacks against wallets, mining rigs, or associated exchange accounts. The financial motivation to target cryptocurrency users makes this data partcularly dangerous.
