HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system discovered the DM Tools data breach, exposing 60,585 records in August 2018. DM Tools was a now-defunct U.S.-based online platform providing tools, resources, and information for Dungeon Masters running Dungeons and Dragons tabletop games. The compromised data included email addresses and password hashes using MD5 and pHpass algorithms, putting registered users at risk of credential-based attacks.

Why This Is Dangerous

Gaming and community platforms attract highly engaged users who often maintain active online presences across multiple gaming accounts, forums, and social platforms using the same passwords. MD5 hashes can be cracked rapidly using precomputed tables and modern tools, and pHpass hashes, while more resilient, are also vulnerable to targeted attacks. With 60,585 exposed credential pairs, attackers have a substantial dataset for credential stuffing campaigns targeting gaming services, forums, and any other accounts where affected users reused their passwords.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Address
  • Password Hash (MD5)
  • Password Hash (pHpass)

Why This Matters

Tabletop gaming community platforms like DM Tools represent a niche but dedicated user base that often overlaps with video gaming communities, Steam accounts, Discord servers, and other platforms. Credential stuffing attacks using data from DM Tools can cascade across these interconnected communities, leading to account takeovers, loss of digital game libraries, identity theft, and financial harm. The exposure of over 60,000 credential records makes this a significant breach for the gaming community.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when attackers exploit security vulnerabilities in website code, outdated software frameworks, or server misconfigurations to gain unauthorized access to stored user data. Community platforms for niche hobbies like tabletop gaming often operate with volunteer administrators or limited IT budgets, making security updates less consistent. Once attackers access the database, they export user credential tables and distribute the data through underground forums and dark web marketplaces where it fuels ongoing attacks.
