HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system discovered the Do Sports Easy data breach, exposing 53,549 records in August 2018. Do Sports Easy is a U.S.-based online recreation management system used by sports leagues, community centers, and athletic programs to manage team registrations, schedules, and participant data. The compromised data included email addresses and password hashes using bcrypt and SHA1 algorithms, putting registered users at risk of credential-based attacks.

Why This Is Dangerous

Recreation management platforms collect personal information from participants, coaches, and administrators involved in organized sports at community and youth levels. SHA1 password hashes are considered cryptographically broken and can be cracked efficiently using modern tools, while bcrypt provides stronger protection but may still be vulnerable if users chose weak passwords. Athletes, coaches, and sports administrators who reused their Do Sports Easy credentials on other platforms face account takeover risks across email, social media, and professional systems.

What Was Exposed

  • Password Hash (bcrypt)
  • Password Hash (SHA1)

Why This Matters

With over 53,000 records exposed, the Do Sports Easy breach affects a broad cross-section of community sports participants across the United States. Recreation management systems store contact details, emergency information, and sometimes payment data for registered participants, making breaches of these platforms particularly impactful for families and community organizations. Credential stuffing attacks using this data can compromise email accounts, banking platforms, and other services where affected users reused passwords.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when attackers exploit security vulnerabilities in website code, server configurations, or outdated software to gain unauthorized access to stored user data. Recreation management platforms often serve multiple client organizations and run on shared infrastructure, meaning a single vulnerability can expose data from many different leagues and programs. Once attackers access the database, they export user credential tables and distribute the data through underground forums where it is used for automated credential stuffing campaigns.
