In May 2023, HEROIC security analysts confirmed that a Telegram user distributed a stealer log file called DuckCloudFree, exposing 8,537 records containing email addresses, plaintext passwords, and URLs harvested directly from malware-infected devices across the United States. The breach was verified by HEROIC's dark web monitoring team and has been circulating among criminal networks for over three years without a single victim notification ever being issued. Eight thousand five hundred and thirty-seven people had their login credentials exposd without ever recieving a warning, and criminals have had years to exploit every one of those accounts. If your email is in this dataset, your password is in criminal hands right now.

Why This Is Dangerous

The DuckCloudFree breach contains plaintext passwords, which means criminals do not need to crack, decode, or process the data in any way before using it. The moment someone downloads this file, they can attempt to log into your email, your bank, your cloud storage, and every other account where you used the same password. Three years of criminal circulation means this data has been tested, bought, resold, and exploited extensively. The longer credentials sit in criminal hands without victims acting, the greater the accumulated damage across banking, identity, and personal accounts.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Addresses: Your email is the master key to your entire digital identity. Criminals who control your email address can trigger password resets and lock you out of every account tied to that inbox.
  • Plaintext Passwords: These are not hashed or encrypted. They are your actual passwords, ready for immediate use against any account where you reused the same login combination.
  • URLs: Captured URLs reveal exactly which services you were logged into when the malware ran, giving attackers a confirmed hit list of your most actively used accounts to target first.

Why This Matters

Three years is a long time for stolen credentials to circulate on criminal markets. The 8,537 individuals in the DuckCloudFree dataset have faced over three years of exposure to credential stuffing attacks, targeted phising campaigns, and account takeover attempts built from their stolen information. Password reuse dramatically amplifies the damage: if the password stolen in this breach is the same one you use for email, banking, or social media, all of those accounts are potentially compromised. Even if you changed your password on one platform, every other service where you used the same login remains vulnerable until you act.

How Stealer Logs Work

A stealer log is the direct output of malware that secretly installs on a victim's device and silently harvests every saved browser password, active session cookie, and authenticated URL without producing any visible sign of compromise. The malware typically arrives through trojanized software downloads, cracked applications, fake update prompts, or phishing emails disguised as legitimate notifications. Once running, it extracts all stored credentials and packages them into a log file that is then uploaded to Telegram channels or sold on dark web markets, where it circulates indefinetly. Victims almost never discover the infection until unauthorized account activity appeares on a bank statement or a locked account notice arives in their inbox, often months or years after the initial theft.
