HEROIC analysts identified the Eddy Cycles breach, which occured in June 2019 and exposed 30,409 user records from the now-defunct Thai bicycle e-commerce site. The compromised data included email addresses and plaintext passwords. Because this Thai shopping platform stored passwords without any hashing, every credential in the breach was immediately ready for use by attackers with no additional processing required.

How Plaintext Passwords from a Thai Shopping Site Fuel Global Credential Attacks

Attackers who recieved the Eddy Cycles dataset obtained ready-to-use email and password pairs. Even though the site itself is no longer active, the credentials are accessable to anyone who obtains the breach data. These pairs are immediately tested against active services worldwide, including email providers, payment platforms, and social media networks. Users who reused their Eddy Cycles password on any other platform face direct account takeover risk today.

Why the Eddy Cycles Breach Still Matters for Thai Users Today

The Eddy Cycles breach is partcularly relevant for users across Thailand and the broader region because regional e-commerce sites often serve customers who also use local banking apps, government portals, and regional email providers with the same credentials. A plaintext password breach means attackers do not need to crack anything: they can move directly from the Eddy Cycles data to testing credentials against any platform the victim uses, making the risk immediate and ongoing even years after the original leak.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a website's backend database, typically by exploiting software vulnerabilities, weak access controls, or insecure server configurations. When a site stores passwords as plaintext rather than applying a hashing algorithm, any unauthorized access to the database immediately yields usable credentials. The Eddy Cycles breach reflects this exact failure: a database exposed without the protection of even basic password hashing.
