16,233 epa.gov Login Credentials Leaked in Plaintext Log
In June 2026, HEROIC analysts found a stealer log naming epa.gov that had been uploaded to Telegram by a threat actor. The file contained 16,233 records made up of email addresses, plaintext passwords, and the URLs those credentials were entered on.
Why This epa.gov Stealer Log Is Dangerous
This log did not come from a break-in at epa.gov's own systems, it came from malware infecting individual users' devices and stealing whatever credentials were saved for logging into epa.gov and other sites. What makes it dangerous is that the passwords sit in plaintext right next to the exact login URL, so an attacker can try each one without any extra effort to decode or crack it.
What Was Exposed
- Email addresses
- Plaintext passwords
- URLs linked to each set of credentials
Why This Matters
Because the login URL travels with each password, attackers can attempt account takeover on the 16,233 accounts in this log without any guesswork. If a person reused one of these passwords on a personal email, banking, or other account, credential stuffing tools let attackers try that same password across many unrelated services, multiplying the fallout from a single infected device.
How Stealer Logs Work
Stealer logs are produced by malware that quietly infects a device, then copies saved browser passwords, autofill data, and the web addresses tied to them before sending it all back to the attacker. Because the theft happens on the individual's own computer rather than through a hacked server, the stolen logins are frequently still active and unchanged when the log is shared or sold on Telegram.
