The incident occured when attackers gained unauthorized access to the forum database, exposing 774,286 user records. The compromised data included email addresses and hashed passwords stored using the MD5 algorithm, which is particularly weak by modern standards and accessable to cracking tools widely available online.

Why MD5 Hashed Passwords Put Evony Users at Risk

MD5 hashed passwords offer little real protection. Attackers use precomputed tables called rainbow tables to reverse MD5 hashes back to plain text passwords in seconds.
