In February 2023, FantasyBox, an Indian IT services provider operating fantasy sports applications, experienced a database breach that exposed the personal data of 1,802 users. Attackers exfiltrated email addresses, phone numbers, full names, and bcrypt hashed passwords from the platform's customer database. The breach is partcularly notable given that fantasy sports platforms collect a mix of contact information and account credentials that can fuel both identity theft and account takeover attacks.

Why Leaked Phone Numbers and Passwords Put You at Risk

The combination of phone numbers and hashed passwords in the FantasyBox breach creates compounding risks for affected users. Phone numbers can be used in SIM-swapping attacks to bypass SMS-based two-factor authentication, while cracked password hashes enable direct account takeovers on FantasyBox and any other service where the same credentials were reused. Together, these data types give attackers multiple pathways to compromise accounts beyond FantasyBox itself, making this breach more dangerous than it may initially appear.

Why the FantasyBox Breach Still Matters Today

Breached data from platforms like FantasyBox does not simply disappear after it is first posted online. Criminals package datasets like this one and sell them repeatedly, meaning the original 1,802 affected users may find their information recieved by dozens of separate threat actors over time. The ongoing availability of this data keeps credential stuffing and phishing risks elevated for anyone who had an account with FantasyBox.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a company's stored data, typically by exploiting software vulnerabilities, misconfigured servers, or stolen administrative credentials. Once inside, the attacker exports customer records directly from the database. The stolen data is then sold or published on underground forums where other criminals can purchase and exploit it.
