HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system identified the FastSaloons.com data breach, exposing 81,943 records from this UK-based car enthusiast and informational portal. The breach occured in August 2018 and compromised user email addresses alongside passwords stored using phpBB3 MD5 and standard MD5 hashing. With over 80,000 accounts exposed, this breach represents a significant credential theft event affecting automotive enthusiasts who registered to access forums, articles, and community features on the platform.

Why This Is Dangerous

Car enthusiast forums attract dedicated hobbyists who often use the same email and password combination across dozens of automotive, e-commerce, and social platforms. phpBB3 MD5 and standard MD5 hashes are both weak by modern standards and can be reversed quickly using rainbow tables and GPU-based cracking rigs. Attackers who obtain these hashes can crack thousands of passwords per second, giving them immediate access to thier corresponding email accounts and any other service where the password was reused. The large volume of 81,943 accounts makes this dataset particularly attractive for bulk credential stuffing operations.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Addresses
  • Password Hashes (MD5 / phpBB3 MD5)

Why This Matters

Community and forum platforms like FastSaloons.com frequently see high rates of password reuse because users view them as low-stakes registrations. In reality, the email address verified through such a registration becomes a confirmed active inbox, and the cracked password provides an attack key for numerous higher-value accounts. Criminals who recieve these datasets test credentials against popular webmail providers, shopping platforms, and banking portals in automated waves. Even years after a breach, this data continues circulating in credential combo lists used by fresh attack campaigns.

How Database Breach Works

Forum platforms running on phpBB and similar software are common breach targets because historical vulnerabilites in these systems are well documented and exploit scripts are widely available. Attackers scan the internet for outdated software versions, inject malicious queries through login or search fields, or gain access via compromised administrator accounts. Once inside the database, extracting all user records takes seconds. The reliance on MD5-based password hashing, which phpBB3 used by default, meant that a seperate layer of protection against credential exposure was never in place.

Check If You Are Affected

If you registered on fastsaloons.com at any point before August 2018, your email address and password hash may appear in this dataset. Use HEROIC's free breach lookup tool to check if your credentials were exposed. Change your FastSaloons password on any other platform where you reused it, and consider enabling two-factor authentication on your email account as a first priority since that is the most commonly targeted account in post-breach attacks.
