We observed the resurfacing of a data set attributed to "Free Online View Ads," an India-based classified advertising platform that ceased operations several years ago. The leak, initially documented on August 26, 2018, has re-emerged, potentially impacting users who may have long since forgotten their association with the service. What struck us was the continued relevance of such older, seemingly defunct data in current threat actor arsenals, underscoring the persistent risk posed by legacy data exposure.

The breach, impacting 10,677 unique records, primarily involved email addresses and password hashes. The hashes were encoded using Base64, a relatively weak encryption method that offers minimal protection against modern cracking techniques. This data was disseminated on a prominent cybercrime forum, a common distribution channel for compromised credentials. The nature of the breach points to a database compromise, likely a direct extraction from the platform's backend. The implications are significant, as these credentials could be leveraged for credential stuffing attacks against other services, especially if users have reused their passwords. The fact that the platform is defunct means there is no avenue for direct remediation with the original entity, leaving affected individuals vulnerable.

While this specific incident predates widespread media attention, the general trend of old data resurfacing is a recurring theme in cybersecurity.
