In December 2024, HEROIC analysts found a stealer log labeled "FREENET.DE VALID ACCESS" that had been uploaded to Telegram by an anonymous user. The file contained 1,979 records specifically confirmed to work against freenet.de, a widely used German internet and email provider, and included email addresses, plaintext passwords, and the URLs of the login pages tied to each account.

Why This Freenet.de Access Leak Is Dangerous

The label "valid access" is the key detail here: it means these aren't just scraped or guessed credentials, they're logins that were already confirmed to work. That saves an attacker the trouble of testing thousands of combinations and hands them a shortlist of accounts they know they can get into right now, using the person's real email address and plaintext password.

What Was Exposed

  • Email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords
  • URLs of the associated login sites

Why This Matters

Email accounts are often the master key to a person's digital life, since they're used to reset passwords for banking, shopping, and social media accounts. If an attacker gets into a freenet.de inbox using one of these confirmed logins, they can potentially reset passwords elsewhere and take over additional accounts, a chain reaction commonly known as account takeover. Anyone who reused this password on other sites faces the same risk through credential stuffing.

How Stealer Logs Work

Stealer logs come from malware that quietly infects a device, then collects whatever usernames, passwords, and browser session data are stored there before sending it all back to the attacker. Because this data reflects what was actually saved and used, it's often accurate and ready to use immediately, which is exactly why criminals label sets like this one "valid access" and sell or share them on Telegram.
