HEROIC analysts discovered a stealer log file posted to a public Telegram channel on November 4, 2023, by a user operating under the handle "gift109." The file contained 1,583 records harvested directly from infected devices using infostealer malware. Each record included an email address, a plaintext password, and the URL of the service the credentials belonged to. Unlike large corporate breaches where millions of records are stolen from a server, this type of leak targets individuals directly -- one infected computer at a time.

Why This Is Dangerous

This breach hands attackers a complete login package for 1,583 accounts. With plaintext passwords and the exact URLs they work on, there is no guesswork involved. A criminal who downloads this file can log in to the listed services within minutes. Because the data also includes email addresses, attackers can attempt password resets on other platforms, access inboxes to intercept security codes, and move laterally across every account tied to that email. The gift109 leak is not a minor inconvenience -- it is a direct threat to anyone whose data was captured by the malware that produced it.

What Was Exposed

  • Email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords
  • Service URLs (the specific sites the stolen credentials unlock)

Why This Matters

When credentials are leaked in plaintext, criminals do not need to crack or decode anything. They feed the data directly into automated tools that attempt logins across hundreds of websites at once -- a tactic known as credential stuffing. A single exposed email and password combination can lead to account takeovers on banking platforms, social media, cloud storage, and shopping sites. Identity theft and financial fraud can follow quickly. Stealer log data is also traded and resold on dark web markets long after the original upload, meaning the risk does not dissapear over time.

How Stealer Log Breaches Work

Stealer log breaches start on the victim's own device. Infostealer malware is typically distributed through phishing emails, fake software downloads, or malicious browser extensions. Once installed, it quietly harvests saved passwords from browsers, desktop apps, and password managers. It records which URLs those passwords belong to, then packages everything into a structured log file and sends it back to the attacker. The attacker then uploads or sells these logs -- often on Telegram channels where buyers can download them freely. The victim usually has no idea their credentials were stolen until their accounts are already breached. This process is entirely seperate from a company being hacked.
