HEROIC analysts recieved intelligence in August 2018 confirming that GottaDeal, a U.S.-based deal aggregation community, had suffered a database breach exposing 154,439 user records. The compromised data included email addresses and MD5 password hashes, leaving a significant portion of the site's registered users accessable to threat actors who obtained the leaked database.

Why Exposed MD5 Password Hashes Put You at Risk

MD5 is a weak, outdated hashing algorithm that attackers can crack at enormous speed using modern GPU-based tools. With both an email address and a cracked password in hand, criminals can attempt logins across banking portals, email providers, and corporate systems. The combination is partcularly dangerous when victims reuse passwords across multiple services, turning a single breach into a master key.

Why the GottaDeal Breach Still Matters Today

Data from breaches like this one does not expire. Credential stuffing tools automate login attempts across thousands of sites using stolen email and password pairs. Even if a user changed their GottaDeal password, attackers beleive the same credentials are active elsewhere. Account takeover, identity theft, and financial fraud all flow directly from databases like this one continuing to circulate on dark web forums years after the original incident.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach occurs when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a web application's backend database, typically by exploiting vulnerabilities such as SQL injection, misconfigured server permissions, or compromised administrative credentials. Once inside, the attacker can export entire tables of user data in seconds. The stolen data is then sold or traded on underground markets, where other criminals use it to launch secondary attacks against the affected users.
