HEROIC analysts identified a database breach affecting GTA5Base, an online forum for Grand Theft Auto V players, dating back to February 22, 2016. The exposed file contains 4,507 records, including email addresses, IP addresses, and passwords hashed with MD5.

Why the GTA5Base Leak Is Dangerous

MD5 is a weak, outdated method for storing passwords. Freely available cracking tools and precomputed lookup tables can recover a large share of MD5-hashed passwords, especially when the original password was short or common. Once cracked, the password works exactly like a stolen plaintext credential, and it is paired here with a real email address and IP address.

What Was Exposed in the GTA5Base Breach

  • Email addresses
  • IP addresses
  • Passwords (hashed with MD5)

Why This Matters

Gaming forum accounts are often treated as low priority, but the login habits behind them are not. If you used the same email and password combination for GTA5Base that you use for a gaming platform, digital storefront, or email account, that password should be considered compromised. Attackers use exactly this kind of data in credential stuffing attacks, automatically testing stolen logins across many services at once, hoping to find a match and take over the account.

How This Database Breach Happened

This breach fits the pattern of a direct database export, an attacker gaining access to GTA5Base's backend and extracting the email addresses, IP addresses, and password hashes stored for every user in a single action. Storing those passwords with MD5, rather than a stronger modern hashing algorithm, made the data far easier to exploit once it started circulating.

Check If You Are Affected

If you ever had an account on GTA5Base, or you reuse passwords across gaming and other accounts, it's worth checking your exposure. HEROIC's free breach scanner searches a database of more than 400 billion leaked records, so you can find out where your email address has appeared and update any passwords that are still at risk.
