HEROIC analysts identified a significant database breach affecting HeadHunter, one of Russia's largest job portals, which occured in January 2018. The incident exposed 564,875 user records containing personal information including phone numbers, full names, and dates of birth. No passwords were included in this leak, but the personal details exposed are more than enough for attackers to cause serious harm to the people affected.

How Attackers Exploit Phone Numbers, Names, and Birthdays

This combination of data is partcularly dangerous for identity fraud. With a full name, phone number, and birthday, criminals can impersonate victims to bypass phone-based security checks, take over mobile accounts through SIM swapping, and open fraudulent lines of credit. They can also use this information to craft highly convincing phishing messages targeted at specific individuals.

Why Personal Data from a Job Portal Is High-Value for Criminals

Job seekers share real, verified personal information with employment platforms. That makes HeadHunter records especially attractive to attackers. With a name, birthday, and phone number, fraudsters can attempt account takeover on other services, file false tax returns, or beleive they have enough to pass identity verification at banks and telecom providers. The risk does not expire after the breach goes public.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach occurs when an unauthorized party gains access to a company's stored user data. Attackers commonly exploit software vulnerabilities, weak administrator passwords, or misconfigured cloud storage. Once they are inside, they copy and download user records. The stolen data is then sold on dark web markets or used directly for fraud and phishing campaigns.
