In April 2024, HEROIC analysts uncovered a stealer log named "HelloKittyCloud 500," uploaded to a Telegram channel on 19-Apr-2024. Although the file is more than two years old, it remains in circulation and contains 8,419 records, each pairing an email address with a plaintext password and the URL of the site that login was captured from.

Why the Plaintext Passwords in HelloKittyCloud 500 Are the Real Danger

The most striking detail in this file is not just how many records it holds, but how usable they are. Every password is stored in plain, readable text rather than scrambled or hashed, meaning anyone who opens the file can read login credentials exactly as the victim typed them, with no extra steps needed to make them usable.

What's Inside the HelloKittyCloud 500 File

  • Email addresses
  • Plaintext passwords
  • URLs of the sites each login belongs to

Why This Still Matters Two Years Later

Passwords rarely change unless something forces the issue, like a password reset notice or a new account setup. That means many of the 8,419 credentials in this 2024 file could still work today, leaving affected users exposed to credential stuffing and account takeover long after the original theft took place.

How Stealer Malware Captures Passwords in Plain Text

Information-stealing malware reads saved logins directly from a browser's password storage and autofill data, then writes them out exactly as stored rather than encrypting or obscuring them. This is what makes stealer logs so much more dangerous than a typical hacked database, where passwords are usually hashed. Here, there is nothing left to crack.
