What HEROIC Analysts Found

HEROIC's dark web monitoring team identified a small combolist file titled "1k followers uploaded by a Telegram User," dated to 19 November 2024. Unlike the large-scale leaks HEROIC typically tracks, this particular file contains a single record pairing an email address with a plaintext password and the URL of the site that login was used on. It was shared through a Telegram channel used to trade combolists, with the affected individual located in the United States.

Why Even One Exposed Login Is Dangerous

It is easy to assume that a one-record leak is not worth worrying about, but the risk to the person behind that single record is exactly the same as it would be in a leak of a million. The password is stored in plaintext, so whoever has this file can use the credentials immediately, with no cracking or guessing required.

Because the record includes the specific URL the login was used on, an attacker knows precisely which site to target first, and from there can attempt the same email and password combination on other accounts belonging to the same person.

What Was Exposed

  • Email address
  • Plaintext password
  • URL associated with the login credentials

Why This Matters

A single leaked email and password pair is all it takes for a credential stuffing attempt: automated tools can quietly test that same combination across many other websites in seconds. If the password was reused anywhere else, that other account is now exposed to takeover as well.

From there, the risk can escalate into identity theft or financial fraud if the compromised account is linked to email, banking, or shopping services, so a single exposed record deserves the same attention as a larger breach.

How Combolists Work

A combolist is a file of email-and-password pairs, usually pulled from older breaches or malware infections and then shared or sold on platforms like Telegram. Combolists vary widely in size, from massive files with millions of entries down to small, targeted files like this one containing a single record. Regardless of size, the goal is the same: giving attackers ready-to-use login credentials to test against other sites.

Check If You Are Affected

The only way to know for certain whether your email and password are part of this or any other leaked file is to check. HEROIC's free breach scanner searches more than 400 billion leaked records, including small combolists like this one, to tell you whether your information has been exposed. If it has, change that password right away and avoid reusing it anywhere else.
