HEROIC analysts flagged the Hogwartz.ir Forum breach while reviewing recieved data from underground credential markets in late 2022. The breach occured in November 2016, affecting 128 registered users of the Iranian Harry Potter fan forum. Though the record count is small, the vBulletin password hashes included in the database dump remain crackable, and the data has since resurfaced in combined credential lists traded across dark web forums.

Fan Forum Members Targeted for Credential Stuffing and Account Takeover

Attackers who acquire forum breach data like this don't stop at the original site. They crack the vBulletin hashes, then run the recovered passwords against email providers, social media accounts, and streaming services. Niche community members are partcularly at risk because they often reuse the same username and password across many platforms, making a single forum breach a key that opens multiple doors.

  • vBulletin password hashes

Why Fan Community Breaches Are More Dangerous Than They Look

A 128-record breach from a niche forum might seem insignificant, but the data is accessable to anyone willing to pay a few dollars on a dark web marketplace. Attackers use it for credential stuffing, account takeover, and identity theft. When combined with data from other leaks, even a small forum breach can provide enough detail to impersonate someone convincingly or gain access to their financial accounts.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach happens when an unauthorized person gains access to the private backend of a website or application. For forum sites like Hogwartz.ir, this typically means extracting the user table, which holds account names and stored password hashes. Attackers then use offline cracking tools to convert those hashes into usable plain-text passwords, which are later tested against other services through automated login attempts.
