HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system discovered the HongKongIndians data breach, exposing 15,720 records from a now-defunct India-based news and information website serving the Hong Kong Indian community. The breach occured in March 2018, leaking email addresses and MD5 password hashes that have since appeared in credential combolists circulating on underground forums.

Why This Is Dangerous

MD5 password hashes provide almost no real protection against modern cracking techniques. Attackers use GPU-accelerated tools capable of testing billions of hash combinations per second, meaning most MD5 hashes from this breach can be reversed to plaintext passwords quickly. Once attackers recieve working credentials, they automate login attempts across popular email providers, social media platforms, and financial services, targeting users who reuse passwords across accounts.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Address
  • Password Hash (MD5)

Why This Matters

Community-focused sites like HongKongIndians often attract tightly-knit user bases where members share personal contact details and community ties. Attackers who crack these credentials can impersonate trusted community members to run social engineering scams, phishing attacks, or fraud campaigns targeting the same network. The risk of credential stuffing is compounded because community site users frequently reuse thier passwords on banking or workplace accounts, creating a direct path to financial harm.

How Combolists Work

A combolist is a compiled file containing millions or billions of username and password pairs aggregated from multiple database leaks. Threat actors purchase or download raw breach data, crack any hashed passwords, and merge the results into a single list. These lists are then sold or shared freely across Telegram channels and hacking forums, where they power automated credential stuffing tools that attack any site with a login form.
