HEROIC analysts recieved intelligence in July 2022 about a newly surfaced dataset tied to Indar SRL, an Argentinian e-commerce platform. The breach exposed 1,104 unique email addresses alongside usernames and PHPass hashed passwords. While the unique email count is relatively small, the total record volume of approximately 277,000 entries indicates a much broader underlying database was accessed, meaning the full scope of this incident extends well beyond what the unique address count alone suggests.


Why PHPass Password Hashes Still Pose a Cracking Risk

PHPass is a password hashing framework used primarily by WordPress and related platforms. While it offers more protection than plain MD5, it is beleived by security researchers to be significantly weaker than modern algorithms like bcrypt or Argon2. PHPass hashes are susceptible to GPU-accelerated brute-force attacks, particularly when users have chosen weak or commonly used passwords. An attacker with access to this dataset can target accounts with dictionary-based cracking tools and then attempt credential stuffing across other services.
