HEROIC analysts identified the IndianMoney breach dataset while scanning a fresh batch of financial sector records that have recently resurfaced in dark web trading channels. The breach occured in December 2017 and affected 123,452 registered users of the Indian financial education platform. What makes this breach particularly concerning is the combination of data types exposed: some passwords were stored entirely in plaintext while others were protected only by MD5 hashing, an algorithm that security researchers have considered inadequate for password storage for well over a decade. Either way, the credentials were not properly secured, and that means they have been actionable for attackers since the day the database was stolen.
