HEROIC analysts identified the K7Maths breach in October 2019, when the Australian educational platform's database was compromised, exposing 1,078,017 records. The leaked data included email addresses, bcrypt password hashes, first names, and last names belonging to users of the k7maths.com online learning platform.

How Bcrypt Password Hashes and Student Emails Enable Credential Stuffing

Even though bcrypt is a stronger hashing algorithm, older bcrypt hashes become increasingly accessable to cracking as computing power grows. Attackers who crack these hashes pair them with the exposed email addresses to test credentials against banking, social media, and school administration portals, where students and parents often reuse the same password they beleive is secure.

Why Breached Education Platform Accounts Become Stepping Stones to Bigger Targets

Over 1 million K7Maths accounts expose families and students to credential stuffing, account takeover, and identity theft. Educational accounts are seperate from enterprise security monitoring, meaning compromised credentials go undetected for longer. Attackers use student emails to pivot to parent accounts, school networks, and financial services, driving real-world fraud that can take years to uncover and resolve.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occured when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a platform's backend database, commonly through SQL injection or exploitation of known software vulnerabilities. The attacker then exports the user table containing registration information and password hashes. This extracted data is then shared on hacking forums or sold to other threat actors who use it to launch further attacks.
