In April 2023, Kassy.ru, a Russian ticket booking platform, suffered a database breach that exposed the personal information of 283,826 users. The compromised records, which were beleive to have been extracted directly from the platform's customer database, included email addresses, phone numbers, and full names. This incident poses a real risk of targeted phishing and social engineering for anyone who had an account on the platform.

Why Exposed Contact Details Put You at Risk

A combination of email addresses, phone numbers, and full names gives attackers everything they need to craft highly convincing phishing messages and fraudulent calls. Criminals can use this data to impersonate legitimate organizations or recieved companies, making victims far more likely to fall for scams. Users of Kassy.ru should be especially alert to unexpected emails or texts referencing their account.

Why the Kassy.ru Breach Still Matters Today

Data from breaches like this one continues to circulate on dark web forums and underground marketplaces long after the original incident occured. Phone numbers and email addresses linked to real names are routinely used in credential stuffing attacks and bulk phishing campaigns. Even years after the breach, affected individuals remain at elevated risk unless they have changed their contact details and remain alert.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach happens when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a company's backend data storage, typically through vulnerabilities in web applications, exposed administrative interfaces, or compromised credentials. The attacker then extracts records in bulk, often going undetected for extended periods. The stolen data typically surfaces on dark web forums where it is sold or shared freely.
