KATANA_CLOUD Leak: 11,976 Records, More Than Many Small Towns
HEROIC analysts identified a stealer log dataset called KATANA_CLOUD FREE circulating on Telegram, dated May 21, 2024. The file contained 11,976 records made up of email addresses, plaintext passwords, and the URLs each credential pair unlocks. That is more login combinations than the number of people living in many small U.S. towns, all sitting in a single file that anyone in the Telegram channel could download.
Why This Is Dangerous
Because the passwords in this log are stored in plaintext, no cracking or guessing is required to use them. Anyone holding the file can pair each email address with its password and the exact URL it belongs to, then log straight into that account. That makes the data immediately usable for account takeover the moment it starts circulating.
What Was Exposed
- Email addresses
- Plaintext passwords
- URLs tied to each set of credentials
Why This Matters
Stealer logs like KATANA_CLOUD FREE are routinely used to fuel credential stuffing attacks, where attackers run stolen email and password pairs against many other websites in hopes that the same password was reused elsewhere. Every reused password in this dataset is a potential entry point into email accounts, shopping accounts, or financial services, which is how a single stealer log can snowball into identity theft and financial fraud for the people in it.
How Stealer Logs Work
A stealer log is generated by infostealer malware that infects a device, often through a pirated download, fake software update, or phishing link. Once installed, it quietly harvests saved passwords, autofill data, and browsing details straight from the browser and system, then packages everything into a text file. That file is then sold or shared, in this case uploaded to a Telegram channel under the name KATANA_CLOUD FREE, giving anyone who downloads it ready-made access to thousands of accounts.
