The KeeperCloud Telegram Leak Put 3,722 Stolen Passwords Online
On December 12, 2022, a Telegram user uploaded a stealer log file referred to as "KeeperCloud 400 logs" to a public channel. HEROIC analysts identified the file during routine monitoring of dark web and Telegram activity. It contained 3,722 records, each pairing an email address with a plaintext password and a related URL.
Why This Is Dangerous
The passwords in this file are stored in plaintext, meaning anyone who downloads it can read and use them immediately, with no cracking or decryption required. Each record also links to a URL, showing exactly which account or service the stolen credentials open. That combination makes the data ready to use for logging into real accounts the moment it is downloaded.
What Was Exposed
- Email addresses
- Plaintext passwords
- URLs linked to the compromised accounts
Why This Matters
Credentials like these are commonly used in credential stuffing attacks, where automated tools test the same email and password combination across banking, email, and shopping sites. Because many people reuse passwords across multiple accounts, one exposed login can open the door to several others. That can quickly escalate into account takeover, identity theft, and financial fraud for anyone whose data appears in the file.
How Stealer Logs Work
A stealer log is generated by information-stealing malware that runs quietly on an infected device, capturing login details as the user types them into websites and apps. Rather than breaching a company's servers directly, this malware harvests credentials straight from the victim's own computer, often after they download a fake program or pirated software. The stolen data is then packaged into a log file and shared or sold, in this case posted to a public Telegram channel where anyone could access it.
