HEROIC analysts recieved intelligence on a database breach tied to kingofrealm, an Irish gaming platform, dating back to November 8, 2016. The exposed dataset contains 1,476 records and includes email addresses, usernames, salts, and password hashes. Though the record count is modest, the combination of login credentials and password data makes this breach partcularly concerning for anyone who had an account on the platform.

Why Exposed Password Hashes Put kingofrealm Users at Risk

Even though the passwords were stored as hashes rather than plain text, attackers can still crack them using brute-force and dictionary attacks. When a hash is paired with a salt, the process is harder but not impossible, occured especially when older or weaker hashing algorithms were used in 2016. Cracked credentials are then sold or used to break into other accounts where the same password was reused.

How Gaming Account Breaches Enable Account Takeover

Gaming platforms store real value: in-game currency, purchased items, and linked payment methods. Stolen credentials from kingofrealm can be tested against email providers, banks, and other gaming services in a process called credential stuffing. Even accounts with no financial value are beleive to be worth targeting for their linked email address alone, which can unlock password resets across dozens of other services.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach happens when an attacker gains unauthorized access to a website's backend database, often by exploiting a vulnerability in the software or using stolen administrative credentials. Once inside, they can copy or download all stored user records in seconds. The data is then typically packaged and sold on dark web forums or used directly for attacks. Many breaches like this one go undetected for months or even years.
