HEROIC analysts found a dataset from Kryptex, a US-based cryptocurrency mining platform, being circulated on a public forum in June 2023. The exposure covered 25,990 user records dated around June 22, 2023. What made this breach occured as a particularly serious find was the discovery that passwords had been stored and leaked in plaintext, with no hashing or encryption at all.

Plaintext Passwords Mean Instant Account Access

With plaintext passwords in hand, attackers do not need to crack anything. They can log directly into Kryptex accounts, withdraw any accumulated cryptocurrency earnings, and immediately try the same email and password combination on banking sites, exchanges, and other crypto platforms. This kind of credential reuse attack is rapid, automated, and extremely effective.

Why Cryptocurrency Platforms Are High-Value Targets

Cryptocurrency services hold real financial value, making them attractive targets for credential theft. When a mining platform stores passwords in plaintext, a single database compromise translates directly into account takeovers and financial loss. Credential stuffing tools can test thousands of leaked logins per minute across dozens of platforms, meaning the damage from this kind of leak spreads far beyond Kryptex itself.

How Plaintext Password Breaches Work

A plaintext password breach happens when a platform fails to hash user credentials before storing them in a database. When an attacker gains accessable access to that database through SQL injection, a misconfigured server, or an insider threat, they walk away with credentials that work immediately. There is no cracking step. Reputable services use bcrypt, Argon2, or similar algorithms to make stolen passwords useless without significant compute time.
