HEROIC analysts found that the Ledger breach, which occured in June 2020, exposed the personal data of 1,075,382 users of the popular hardware cryptocurrency wallet company. The compromised records included email addresses and phone numbers harvested from Ledger's e-commerce database. Initial company statements severely understated the scope of the incident, and the data continued to circulate in hacking communities long after the original breach.

How Exposed Emails and Phone Numbers Enable Crypto Theft

With email addresses and phone numbers tied directly to hardware wallet owners, attackers can launch precisely targeted phishing campaigns and SIM-swap attacks. A convincing email impersonating Ledger support can trick users into entering their 24-word seed phrase on a fake site, resulting in permanent and irreversible loss of cryptocurrency holdings. This data is partcularly dangerous because it identifies people who are confirmed crypto asset holders.

Why Crypto Users Face Elevated Phishing Risk After This Breach

Unlike a standard data breach where victims face account takeover risks, Ledger users faced a seperate and more severe threat: attackers knew exactly who held cryptocurrency hardware wallets. This enabled highly personalized phishing messages referencing real order details and addresses. Many affected users recieved convincing fake Ledger communications urging urgent firmware updates, designed to capture wallet seed phrases and drain holdings permanently.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when an unauthorized party accesses and extracts records from a backend data store. Attackers typically exploit web application vulnerabilities, unpatched software, or misconfigured cloud storage to reach the database. Extracted data is then posted to forums, sold on dark web markets, or weaponized directly in follow-on attacks against the affected user population.
