HEROIC's DarkHive intelligence system discovered the Matroids Matheplanet breach, exposing 34,100 records from this German mathematics community platform. The breach occurred in October 2018 and included email addresses and password hashes from registered users of matheplanet.com. Matroids Matheplanet is a non-commercial educational community offering peer-reviewed mathematical articles, problem-solving discussions, and resources for students and mathematics enthusiasts across German-speaking countries. The breach affected members of a trusted academic community who may not expect their niche educational platform to be targeted by attackers.

Why This Is Dangerous

The password hashes exposed in this breach were stored in an unknown format, which adds uncertainty about how resistant they are to cracking. Older or weaker hashing algorithms commonly found in community forum software from this era can be cracked using rainbow table attacks or GPU-accelerated brute force tools. Members of an academic mathematics community may include university students, educators, and researchers who often use institutional or professional email addresses, and credential reuse on such accounts could expose university systems, research databases, or professional platforms to unauthorized access. The long interval between the breach in 2018 and public awareness of the dataset's circulation means affected users have had limited opportunity to take protective action.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Addresses
  • Password Hashes

Why This Matters

Academic and education-sector breaches carry particular risk because users commonly register with institutional email addresses, creating a direct link between compromised personal credentials and university or research organization accounts. If a Matroids Matheplanet user reused the same password on their university portal, research collaboration platform, or work email, attackers who crack the hash can access those systems. The 34,100 records represent a community of engaged mathematics students and educators, many of whom likely value security but may not have been notified of this 2018 breach. Credential stuffing attacks using this dataset remain a risk years after the original incident.

How Database Breaches Work

A database breach occurs when attackers exploit vulnerabilities in web application code, server configurations, or content management systems to extract the backend database. Forum and community platforms like Matroids Matheplanet often run on open-source forum software that, if not kept updated, contains known vulnerabilities attackers can exploit. Once the database is extracted, user registration data including email addresses and hashed passwords are exported and later shared or sold on breach forums. Even when passwords are hashed rather than stored as plaintext, weak or outdated hashing algorithms can be reversed to reveal the original passwords through specialized cracking tools.

Check If You Are Affected

HEROIC offers a free identity scanner searching over 400 billion records including data from the Matroids Matheplanet breach. Visit heroic.com to check if your information was exposed. If you were a registered member of matheplanet.com and used the same password on any other service, particularly institutional or professional accounts, you should update that password immediately and enable two-factor authentication where available.
