HEROIC analysts identified the MC Imperia breach while reviewing a cluster of gaming community database leaks that occured in the second half of 2021. MC Imperia, a French gaming server, had 10,178 user records exposed on September 17, 2021. The leaked data included email addresses and usernames belonging to members of this French-language gaming community.

How Exposed Emails and Usernames from MC Imperia Enable Phishing Attacks

Even without passwords, the combination of email addresses and usernames is partcularly valuable to attackers. Threat actors use this pairing to craft convincing phishing emails addressed by username, targeting victims with fake account alerts, prize notifications, or malware links. Gamers who recieved such messages from apparent community contacts would have little reason to suspect fraud.

Why Gaming Community Breaches Like MC Imperia Carry Hidden Risk

Gaming communities are tightly knit, and data from them fuels targeted social engineering. Attackers with access to MC Imperia's user list can correlate those usernames and emails across other gaming platforms, forums, and Discord servers, enabling account takeover attempts, identity theft, and credential stuffing on any site where the same email was used to register.

How a Database Breach Works

A database breach occurs when unauthorized access is gained to a server's data store, typically through an unpatched vulnerability, misconfigured access controls, or compromised admin credentials. The attacker extracts the user table and the data is then sold or distributed through breach forums or private channels.
