Stealer Logs Explained: MegaCloud Leak Hits 3,249 Hotmail Users
In December 2024, HEROIC analysts identified a stealer log titled "3.2K Full Valid Hotmail HITS By MegaCloud 19.12" that had been uploaded to Telegram by an anonymous user. The file contained 3,249 records of Hotmail accounts, including email addresses, plaintext passwords, and the URLs of the login pages tied to each account. This is a classic example of what security researchers call a stealer log: a batch of credentials harvested directly from infected devices rather than stolen from a company's servers.
Why This Stealer Log Is Dangerous
The seller's labels, "full valid" and "hits," are dark web shorthand for logins that have already been tested and confirmed to work. That means an attacker doesn't need to guess passwords or break through security, they simply take the email and password pair and log straight into the account. With 3,249 confirmed working Hotmail logins in one file, the potential for immediate account access is high.
What Was Exposed
- Email addresses
- Plaintext passwords
- URLs of the associated login sites
Why This Matters
A Hotmail account is often the key to a person's wider digital life, since email is used to reset passwords for banking, shopping, and social media accounts. If an attacker gets into one of these 3,249 inboxes, they could use it to take over other linked accounts too. Anyone who reused this same password elsewhere is also exposed to credential stuffing, where the same login is tried across many different sites.
How Stealer Logs Work
A stealer log is created when malware secretly infects a device and copies whatever is saved in the browser: usernames, passwords, autofill details, and the websites they belong to. The malware sends all of this back to whoever controls it, who then verifies which logins still work, labels them "valid" or a "hit," and sells or shares the file, exactly as happened with this MegaCloud-branded Hotmail batch.
