Password Type plaintext

HEROIC discovered a geographically targeted stealer log file focused on Mexican internet users that was distributed on Telegram in February 2023. Labeled "Mexico Base," the dump contains 45,056 records, each linking an email address to a plaintext password and the URL of a Mexican or Mexico-serving online platform where the credential was intercepted. This geographic specificity suggests a malware campaign deliberately aimed at the Mexican market.

Plaintext Passwords Leave Mexican Users Exposed

All 45,056 passwords in this collection are stored in plaintext without any form of hashing or encryption. This means every credential is ready for immediate exploitation. For Mexican users, this is especially concerning given the growing adoption of online banking, e-commerce, and government digital services in Mexico, all of which could be compromised if these passwords have been reused.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Addresses — associated with Mexican online service accounts
  • Plaintext Passwords — stored in fully readable, unencrypted format
  • URLs — identifying Mexican platforms and services where credentials were harvested

Regional Credential Stuffing Amplifies the Damage

When attackers possess a geographically concentrated credential dump, they can mount highly targeted credential stuffing campaigns against regional services. Mexican banking portals, government tax systems like SAT, telecommunications providers like Telcel and Telmex, and popular Mexican e-commerce platforms become primary targets. Password reuse across these services means a single leaked credential can provide access to financial accounts, personal tax records, and sensitive communications.

Infostealer Campaigns Targeting Mexican Users

The geographic focus of this dump points to an infostealer campaign that used Spanish-language lures, Mexican software repositories, or compromised Mexican websites as infection vectors. Once the malware is installed, it captures every credential the user enters or has stored in their browser, regardless of the language or country of the website. The stolen credentials are then compiled, sorted by region, and distributed on Telegram channels catering to threat actors focused on Latin American targets.
