DarkHive discovered a data breach affecting Mfsalud, a now-defunct Argentine health information website. The breach exposed 36,568 records including email addresses and plaintext passwords, with data leaked in August 2018. Mfsalud served Argentine users seeking health-related information online, and users who registered on the platform trusted it with account credentials that many also used across other services. The plaintext storage of passwords means the 36,568 extracted records were immediately usable by attackers upon extraction without any decryption or cracking required.

Why This Is Dangerous

Plaintext passwords from a health information platform carry elevated risk because users who register on health-related websites often use the same credentials on healthcare portals, insurance platforms, and telemedicine services where sensitive medical and personal information is stored. The 36,568 plaintext email and password pairs from Mfsalud entered combolist distribution networks immediately upon extraction. Argentina's growing digital health sector means these credentials could be tested against active health insurance portals, pharmacy platforms, and other medical services that store sensitive patient data on seperate systems.

What Was Exposed

  • Email Address
  • Plaintext Password

Why This Matters

Health platform credential breaches carry long-term consequences because users often assume that a defunct site's data has been destroyed when the site goes offline. The 36,568 plaintext credentials from Mfsalud entered combolist networks where they continue to fuel automated credential stuffing campaigns against active Argentine and Latin American platforms years after the breach occured. Users who registered on this defunct health site and reused thier password on active accounts including email, banking, or other health platforms remain vulnerable. The lack of any notification mechanism from a defunct platform leaves affected users unaware of their ongoing exposure.

How Database Breach Works

A database breach occured when attackers exploited vulnerabilities in Mfsalud's platform infrastructure and extracted the full user credential database. The decision to store passwords in plaintext meant every extracted record required no additional processing before use. This data entered combolist distribution networks where it was bundled with other Argentine health and information site breaches and traded on dark web forums for use in automated credential stuffing attacks against active Latin American platforms including email services, social media, and banking applications.

Check If You Are Affected

HEROIC offers a free identity scanner that checks your email address against thousands of known data breaches including the Mfsalud breach. Visit heroic.com to run a free scan and find out if your credentials were exposed. If you registered on Mfsalud or mfsalud.com.ar, check whether you are using the same password on any current healthcare, email, or banking accounts and change those passwords immediately. A password manager helps you generate and store unique passwords for each site, preventing a single breach from compromising multiple sensitive accounts.
